Fossil Fuel Free Pacific

Fossil Fuel Free Pacific.

Days after two cyclones made landfall on Vanuatu within the span of 48 hours, ministers from Pacific Island nations are gathering in the nation's capital from today to deliberate on building towards regional solidarity around a managed phaseout of fossil fuels.

This Ministerial Dialogue, hosted by the Governments of Vanuatu and Tuvalu in Port Vila, follows on from COP27 in Egypt, where the Governments of Tuvalu, Vanuatu, and Fiji hosted a Ministerial Dialogue aimed at navigating a rapid, global phaseout of fossil fuels while continuing to sustainably develop. At the close of COP27, more than 80 countries were in support of a phaseout of all fossil fuels.

Global Workshop on International Court of Justice Advisory Opinion (Eastern Timezone)

In September 2021, the Government of Vanuatu announced its intentions to take climate change to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) seeking an Advisory Opinion. Such an advisory opinion would be a powerful tool in bolstering state action on climate change, complement and strengthen the Paris Agreement, integrate human rights and climate change law, and provide necessary baselines for state action on adaptation, mitigation, and finance. The road to the ICJ requires the UN General Assembly to pass a resolution requesting the ICJ to provide its opinion on the matter. This September, this resolution will be tabled before UN member states and a simple majority of ninety-seven (97) votes will be needed in order to refer the matter to the ICJ. A strong diplomatic and political push is therefore currently underway from governments, and civil society in a bid to secure the necessary support at the General Assembly for such a resolution. Civil Society Organisations in the Pacific and globally have indicated their support and willingness to engage and advance this campaign both in the region and beyond and have formed an initial coalition that would grow to include other national, regional, and global CSOs, and non-state actors interested in the campaign to join in. The ICJ AO CSO Alliance made up of the Pacific Islands Students Fighting Climate Change, Pacific Islands Climate Action Network, Vanuatu Climate Action Network, Greenpeace Australia Pacific, Global Strategic Communications Network and Climate Action Network will collaborate with the Center for International Environmental Law and the Human Rights and Climate Change Working Group to organize two global workshops (Eastern & Western time zones). This workshop aims to socialise the ICJAO campaign and its key themes, and share campaign tools, key messaging, strategies, and tactics as a way to encourage global civil society support for the campaign.
