10 November 2024 [Baku, Azerbaijan] — As the world prepares for COP29, Pacific Island nations are uniting behind a powerful call for justice and equity through the Pacific Climate Justice Demands. Developed through consultation across the Pacific Islands Climate Action Network (PICAN), it's nodes and partners, the Pacific Climate Justice Demands outlines the essential steps needed from the global community to address climate change impacts on the Pacific region. These demands, aimed at shaping the COP29 discussions, reflect a shared vision for a just response to the climate crisis, rooted in the lived experiences and resilience of Pacific communities.
Our Pacific Climate Justice Demands call for meaningful global action on climate finance, loss and damage, emission reduction, and the protection of Indigenous rights and sovereignty. Facing rising seas, increasingly severe weather events, and changes to traditional ways of life, the Pacific is at the frontline, advocating not only for our own survival but for a sustainable, equitable world for all.
