Climate change remains the greatest threat to the Pacific Islands. For communities across this vulnerable region, the impacts of climate change are deeply felt, disrupting lives and livelihoods. Yet, the resilience of Pacific Islanders endures as they face intensifying climate risks primarily driven by fossil fuels. In response, PSIDS have been leaders in global climate diplomacy, pushing for urgent action to limit warming to 1.5°C and transition towards renewable energy. However, achieving this requires substantial support, especially in renewable energy financing and regional cooperation.
The discussion paper, Fossil Fuel Phase Out - Towards a Just Transition in PSIDS, highlights the critical steps needed to phase out fossil fuels, protect fragile ecosystems, and foster a just and sustainable transition. This transition emphasises a holistic approach that prioritises energy sovereignty, economic stability, and respect for human rights. With support from global allies, PSIDS aim to lead by example, implementing policies that phase out fossil fuels and enhance resilience.
