Pacific CSO Statement on the Global Plastics Treaty

[Apia, 25 October 2024] — The Pacific region is severely impacted by plastic pollution, threatening our oceans, air quality, lands, livelihoods, and cultural heritage.

Following COP29 in Azerbaijan next month, negotiations for the Global Plastics Treaty will commence in Busan, South Korea. In preparation for the Intergovernmental Negotiation Committee (INC-5) meeting, and after successfully co-organising Fiji's National Plastics Symposium last week—attended by representatives from each of our country nodes—PICAN has developed a Pacific CSO Statement on the Global Plastics Treaty.

This statement includes specific recommendations for both the Pacific Small Island Developing States (PSIDS) and the Alliance for Small Island Developing States (AOSIS) on key issues under negotiation—detailing our key recommendations for an effective Treaty instrument.
